A unique thermal packaging solution, developed by Exam Packaging to make its existing solutions more sustainable and easier to reuse, while maintaining its excellent thermal performance.
Challenge
Exam’s client was looking for a robust solution to ship product in between sites with dry ice. Their existing solution was not performing as required from a thermal point of view and could not be reused as foreseen.
Exam Packaging designed and developed an updated version of its temperature controlled monobloc polyurethane shippers specifically to offer a solution for this challenge.
Analysis
In order to propose the most suitable solution possible for its client, Exam Packaging analysed the situation and the specific challenges. The most compelling factors were:
- Inter-site transportation (no shipments to external parties), which means the solution would be used in a closed loop
- Need for a box that can easily be cleaned and reused after return
- Dry ice compatibility
- Maintain thermal efficiency
Solution
Exam’s solution combined the proven thermal performance of its existing solutions with the response to some of the specific challenges faced by the client:
- Use of monobloc production technology to ensure excellent thermal performance and strength
- Change inner and outer cardboard with polypropylene sheets to facilitate cleaning and multiple reuse in combination with dry ice
- Design and development of flexible and tailor-made accessories for the client’s products on the inside of the box
- Optimisation of solution size and weight, while reducing risk of damage and product loss
Outcome
Open information sharing between Exam Packaging and its client allowed for the solution to be developed with care, while respecting all requirements. Moreover, thanks to the thermal performance of the box, the client was able to save significantly (+/- 30%) on their usage of dry ice.
Exam Packaging’s IBPP is a unique temperature controlled packaging solution that offers both excellent thermal performance and stimulates reusability at the same time. Thanks to Exam’s monobloc production technique, this solution can be produced in various sizes and for all temperature ranges and durations.
